Description: A rich source of genealogical information can often be found at the end of a person's life. In this webinar we will investigate a variety of records about death that may surprise you, discuss records at funeral homes, the value of cemetery office records, and end with cemetery iconography and how to properly record a monument. There are a least a dozen more places to look for death information that just the death certificate, headstone, or obituary.
 
Presenter Info: Rebecca Whitman Koford holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist® and as a Certified Genealogical LecturerSM. She focuses on research in Maryland, Upstate New York, Virginia, the District of Columbia colonial records, military records from the Revolution through the Civil War, federal records at the National Archives (D.C.), and land records of all types.

Learning Opportunity for Absolute Beginner Genealogists
 
VGS is sponsoring 2 additional "Absolute Beginner Genealogy" classes (one in April & one in May) for any Village residents interested in learning how to research their family history! Attendees will learn how and where to begin their research and how to organize the results.
 
Classes will be taught by Terry & Jim Willard who are well known in The Villages genealogy community. They  have taught classes for The Villages Lifelong Learning College and The Villages Enrichment Academy.
 
Each session is FREE and open to any resident of The Villages. Enrollment is limited to 30 attendees per session, and pre-registration is required.

  • Thursday, May 30: 1:30pm - 3:30pm (at Homestead Rec Cntr, Mabel Room)

When the head of the household is no longer listed, don't assume he/she is dead. It's possible that the former head of household is now living with one of the children

Meaningful genealogy requires thought. Develop a research plan and set goals. Why am I doing genealogy? How far back do I want to go? For example, go back 4 generations, or go back to the immigrant ancestor, or even to just do my father's male line, etc.
