The Sumter County Community of Royal was founded in 1865 at the end of the Civil War by former slaves from the Old Green Plantation on the Withlacoochee River. The community was originally called Picketsville, due to the white picket fences which surrounded its 40 acre parcels.
Royal is one of the oldest African American communities in Florida. ; The Alonzo A. Young, Sr. Enrichment and Historical Center features the "40 Acres and a Mulr Experience" hosted by Young Perforning Artists, Inc.
