Some of the many local, regional and national speakers that we have provided for quality member education...
L-R: George Morgan, Ann Staley,  Alvie Davidson, Donna Moughty, Diahan Southard, Drew Smith & Kathy Stickney
We are often asked by new members, prospective new members and even by other genealogy societies about events and subject matter that we provide at our regular monthly meetings. Below is a list of activities for 2014.
November 2014 VGS Meeting
November 2014
On November 19th, our guest speaker was Mr. Craig Scott CG and he presented "Finding Aids in the National Archives and Pension Research." Craig discussed that "in order to correlate evidence, you must have evidence to correlate. The failing of the typical researcher is that they stop too soon in their evidence collection, believing that they have found all that there is to find about a soldier in the compiled military service record or in the pension materials."

In the afternoon workshop, he went further into locating military records for an individual. He stressed that you should "trace the ancestor through the entire war; don't stop just because you found a unit that he belonged to. It is possible that your ancestor served with more than one unit during the war."

May 2014 Genneral Meeting
On May 28th, our guest speaker was Mr. Jack Butler and he presented "Wills & Estates: Genealogy Gold Mines." Jack discussed Probate and issues when there was a will, Testate, and when there is no will, Intestate. He discussed different probate packets that may be available for a person either Testate or Intestate. He suggested that sense every jurisdiction uses different types of courts to store their probate records; it may be a good idea to know where to look before you begin a search. Google the county from where your ancestors lived and look for probate records for that county. Also, understand the rules that the court may have established for researchers.
